Case in point: H&G designed and built this beautiful new screen porch for a house in the Settler’s Mill neighborhood of Williamsburg. Originally, the house had just an aging wood deck in the backyard. But instead of repairing it, the clients wanted to convert the deck to more usable space. The simple yet elegant porch that H&G designed gives the homeowners plenty of extra space for entertaining, allowing them to get a taste of the outdoors without the mosquitos getting a taste of them.
Having already worked with Hertzler & George on an earlier front yard renovation, the clients trusted H&G to guide this project every step of the way. From initial design concepts and sketches through construction drawings, permits and construction, H&G ensured the project moved in a smooth and timely fashion.
Elements of the design
Skylights – With the new porch roof reducing light to the existing living room, skylights were an important consideration for brightening the space.
Decking – The homeowners chose composite decking for ease of maintenance. With composite decking, there’s no need for yearly painting or sealing and it’s available in a wide variety of colors. Here, the owners chose Azek tongue and groove decking in the Oyster color. Perfect for covered spaces, tongue and groove decking gives a cleaner look than standard decking.
Custom Screens – The white aluminum frames of the custom screens give the porch a sharp, clean look.
Patio and Walkway – Belgard’s Dublin cobble pavers give the patio the timeless look of natural tumbled stone at a more affordable price.
Plant Palette – New plantings provided the finishing touch for the project. A mix of evergreens and flowering plants provides color and structure throughout the year.
