Hertzler & George isn’t just landscapes. We’re also experienced builders, as this house addition in Williamsburg’s Ford’s Colony neighborhood beautifully demonstrates. H&G handled everything from preliminary concepts and building plans to Ford’s Colony Architectural Review approval and James City County building permits.
The clients that lived in this house needed a bit of elbow room for their growing family, so we expanded an existing breakfast room into a new dining space that allows them to expand their dining table for holidays and special occasions. On normal days, it provides space to sit and take in views of the backyard patio and outdoor fireplace (for more information on that part of the project click here).
Our goal with this project was to make the new addition look like it had always been there. So we matched the existing hardi-plank siding and windows as closely as possible, and carefully copied the eave details of the roof.
In addition to the addition, we also renovated the existing deck to better connect the house to the yard and provide storage space below. The new wood railing matches the original Chippendale fence and an attractive butterfly staircase provides easy access to both the driveway and the patio.
Connecting indoor and outdoor spaces is what H&G excels at. Providing gracious, comfortable transitions between inside and outside encourages more use of both, making your yard feel like a natural extension of the house.
To make room for the expansion, the existing condensers needed to be moved around to the side of the house. To hide them from street and to also provide storage space for trash cans, we constructed a new screening fence using low maintenance PVC boards.
