IPM – Integrated Pest Management

Protect your investment in your property’s beauty by hiring your own H&G plant doctor. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the process by which our technicians monitor and remedy your landscape aliments. Our technicians will inspect your property between two and seven times (depends on the type of plants you have and their current health) and treat any pests that are found. Treatments applied include both fungicide and insecticides (contact and systemic). Our IPM program combines both organic and traditional treatments for pests but can be tailored to an organic only program. This service is best combined with our fertilizer and horticultural oil treatments to give your plants the basic care they need.

Do you spray everything?

An objective of IPM is to treat only what is needed to prevent unnecessary pesticides in the environment. In some situations, preventative applications will be made to stop pests before they become a problem but in most cases treatments are only made on plants where pests are observed.

What else can I do for my shrubs?

Aside from scouting for and preventing pests, pruning plants properly is one of the best ways to improve plant health. Our technicians will be happy to offer recommendations to you on how to prune your plants, or just ask us for a free quote and have H&G to do it for you.

IPM Fact Sheet

The Hertzler & George IPM program protects your landscape through a combination of diagnostic plant check-ups and prescription pest control. With each client, we evaluate your yard and tailor a service program specifically suited to your plants and the condition of your landscape. The results? Healthier, more beautiful, and longer-lasting plants.

As studies have shown, an attentive, year-round approach to landscape pest control is the most effective way to reduce damage and infestations. As part of our service, a trained Hertzler & George IPM specialist will inspect your property throughout the growing season, checking for problems and applying treatments only when necessary. Regular monitoring ensures that small problems stay small.

Our team is thoroughly trained in all aspects of Integrated Pest Management and our programs are carefully designed to support your plants’ own natural ability to resist insects and disease. With Hertzler & George, your landscape will receive the most up-to-date, scientific care available.

What is IPM?

Integrated Pest Management—it’s the sort of phrase that must have been thought up by a committee. Even though it’s a mouthful to say, the concept is relatively easy to understand. It’s all about combining (or integrating) several approaches to pest control: chemical treatments, common-sense maintenance practices, and the strengthening your landscape’s natural biological defenses.

IPM is all about understanding the underlying causes of your plants’ problems—not just treating the symptoms. IPM emphasizes precise diagnoses of plant pests and diseases and the application of scientifically tested solutions. It is not guesswork or the indiscriminate spraying of chemical quick-fixes. And it does not mean forgoing chemical pesticide use altogether. Sometimes a chemical application is the answer, but sometimes pest control is as simple as pruning out an infested branch.

IPM is the proactive solution. Its benefits are long-term, cost-effective, and environmentally conservative.

An Eye for Pests

Every Hertzler & George technician is trained to recognize existing and potential pest problems. Many of these can be halted or slowed down when they are detected early enough. During our regular visits, Hertzler & George’s IPM Specialists will apply any necessary pest control treatments only after taking the time to carefully monitor your landscape. You’ll also be informed of any additional corrective measures that are important to maintaining your landscape, such as proper watering, fertilization, pruning, and aerification. And of course, your Hertzler & George IPM specialist is always available to answer questions or to come by for a free service call if any special need arises.

And keep in mind that while your Hertzler & George technician will work diligently to control harmful pests, only 10% of the insects around your home are actually harmful to plants. The rest have an important role to play in preserving the health of the overall environment and won’t bother healthy plants. For example, insects are a vital part of the food chain for songbirds and their chicks. If you get rid of every last bug in your yard you might end up with a completely silent garden. Yes, native insects may cause some leaf damage on your plants, but healthy plants will quickly recover. It is only when things get out of balance (usually with non-native insect pests) that chemical treatments become necessary.

More Effective Chemical Use

When necessary, H&G uses targeted spray treatments instead of applying blanket coverage spraying. We treat only the plants that need treating. Research shows that blanket applications of insecticide actually weaken plants, leaving them susceptible to further pest damage. Responding with even more pesticides further impairs plants, perpetuating chemical dependency in your landscape. No one wants that. Especially where kids, pets, and drinking water are concerned. When we do use chemicals, we use the industry’s safest, most controlled application techniques and products.

And contrary to what you might think, reduced pesticide application can actually result in fewer serious insect infestations because the natural predators of unwanted pests are able to survive and keep the bad guys in check.

When chemical treatment is called for, timing is critical. Many unwanted insect and disease pests pass through multi-stage life cycles during the year and will not respond to treatment if they are dormant. Hertzler & George’s technicians have extensive knowledge of the life cycles of pests common to our area and your treatments will be timed to coincide with the most vulnerable points in their life cycle.

Prevention Goes a Long Way

Proper landscape maintenance is the foundation of IPM. With Hertzler & George, you can relax with confidence, knowing your landscape is being watched over by knowledgeable specialists who will make recommendations to correct the underlying imbalances which favor insects, disease or other problems in the landscape.

Chemical controls become much more efficient, and at times unnecessary, when recommended sanitation and cultural controls are practiced. Proper cultural practices, such as pruning, irrigation, and soil therapy, can disrupt the normal conditions that otherwise allow pests to survive and reproduce.

For instance, fallen debris can harbor disease pathogens and overwintering insect eggs. This is easily addressed by keeping your yard tidy and free of dead branches. In other cases, you may be using fungicides to treat difficult disease conditions, but your problems may clear up just by avoiding overhead watering and pruning your plants to improve air circulation.

While some pest control solutions are simple, it often gets rather complicated. That’s when you need Hertzler & George. Did you know, for example, that Japanese beetle grubs tend to reside and feed for much of their lives in soils that are relatively moist, yet chinch bugs need a dry soil for optimum survival and reproduction? H&G’s IPM technicians can help you navigate these confusing and conflicting conditions to ensure that your pest problems are correctly addressed.

The Key to a Beautiful Landscape

Once you weigh all the costs and benefits, we think you’ll see that a H&G IPM program is a wise investment in your landscape. It’s an investmentment that will lead to larger, healthier plants that are more resistant to insects and disease, and rely less on chemical treatment.

Just like people, plants benefit from regular care and maintenance to stay healthy. Research shows that 90% of all insect and disease problems can be attributed to poor plant health. We know you’ll find Hertzler & George’s multi-faceted, year-round approach to pest control to be the most effective way to maintain your plants’ health. Our clients’ vigorous, healthy and beautiful plants attest to this.

Bed Transformation!

Once again I am very pleased with the excellent work H&G did on my property.  They turned a section of my ugly front yard with invasive Bermuda grass into a beautiful and simple flower bed with mulch and many small bushes.  This striking transformation adds greatly to the house’s curb appeal.  I look forward to them coming back out this fall and replacing the rest of the front yard with sod and removing all the undesirable Bermuda grass.  Brian was easy and pleasant to work and plan with.  He always responded to my questions immediately.  Jon and his crew were likewise very nice, efficient, and perfectionists in planting my new yard.  Many thanks and accolades to H&G once again!

So thankful to be a customer!

when i returned to williamsburg in 2022, it was a real challenge to find a company willing to take on “yet one more customer” – i was ignored and turned down by others… but hertzler and george came to my rescue and i could not be happier – wonderful staff, professional and so friendly, i completely trust them to service my yard!  merry christmas and happy new year to everyone and H&G!

Drainage Help

I would like to let you know how happy we are with the service we received recently.
We had a drainage issue in our yard and did some research, learned your company was highly recommended and decided to see what your company could do.
From the first contact, we had a great experience as the lady that answered the phone was very nice. She put us in contact with Brian Kemp who we also liked from the start, and we made an appt for him to come and take a look. He was right on time, very thorough, and just a very nice fella who we both liked right away and had confidence in. We really liked how he gave us options and listened to what we wanted. We scheduled the work, it was done right on time, and it looks great! Brian was even nice enough to do a video walk through for us afterwards as we weren’t in town. Just great service from start to finish! Thank you Brian

We will definitely be back with more projects in the future.

Thank You

Just a short note to thank you for all the help you gave us with our garden this year. Jonathon again did a wonderful job doing the bed detailing this summer, as did the mulching crew in the spring. I don’t know the name of the woman who supervised the mulching crew, but I want to let you know how professional she was. In fact, the entire crew was pleasant to work with, especially to experience the care that they took with their work.

Thanks also for being so flexible with the changes we requested for our mowing schedule.
