Hertzler & George was called into renovate an existing deck and backyard.
The existing deck overlooked a prime spot on the the James River, but it was aging and didn’t really provide a adequate space for entertaining.
The finished deck that H&G constructed includes a beautiful copper-roofed outdoor kitchen and plenty of space for guests to gather. A balcony above provides a more private spot to soak up the sun.
By designing the project with SketchUp, the client was able to visualize what the completed project would look like and how various elements would affect views of the river. It also allowed us to play with different options, like a freestanding fireplace that was eventually replaced with a firepit.
The area to the side of the existing deck was unused, but had potential.
H&G created a new patio to the side of the new deck with a cozy stacked-stone fire pit. The fire pit and retaining wall were hand-built by our own talented stone masons.
For the outdoor kitchen and bar the client selected Fantasy black granite. The stone was given a durable leather finish to stand up to the harsh weather. A stained tongue and groove roof allows all-weather cooking.
Built in benches and planters complete the custom look. For this project H&G used TimberTech composite decking. The colors the clients selected were Tigerwood and Pecan. The subtle colors contrast add interest to the design without making it fussy.
