January 2010 Scavenger Hunt

No matter the season, there are always beautiful plants to admire.

This month’s puzzler is a scavenger hunt of lovely winter trees, shrubs, and plants in and around Colonial Williamsburg. Make your own walking tour with our Google map, which offers directions to and geographic coordinates for each site. Read on to find out how to win your free prize!

  • Compton Oak (Quercus comptoniae) is a cross between a live oak and an overcup. Located behind the Market Courthouse in Colonial Williamsburg, this oak is an unusual natural hybrid and a National Champion Compton Oak.
  • American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
  • Winterberry Holly Tree (Ilex verticillata)
  • Fragrant Wintersweet Tree (Chimonanthus praecox)
  • The Winter King Hawthorn Tree (Crataegus viridis)
  • Harry Lauder’s Walkingstick (Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’) is a fairly large specimen of its kind. Covered in catkins, it’s a beautiful find this time of year. Please be advised that this plant is on private property. You may look from the road, but don’t trespass.

Be among the first five to send us a photo of this very Harry Lauder’s Walkingstick, and you’ll win a free Hertzler & George ball cap!

Amazing Lawn Since 2006

We have been satisfied customers since 2006. Our front lawn is still beautiful and has been kept weed free. We especially appreciate the care  H &G takes to use treatments that do not endanger the pond and nourishes the soil.  The birds and rabbits love it.

Patio & Trash Pad

Hertzler and George – We dealt with Brian Kemp for our trash pad and rear patio. We can’t say enough how well Brian took care of us. He patiently brought samples to us, quite a few times, listened to what we needed and created a beautiful rendering, with plants that we were thrilled with. His guidance was what made this all come together seamlessly.

The crew assigned did a great job in bringing it all to life and were very careful in every step of the construction.

We would highly recommend this company for their expertise and experience with pavers.

Stress Free Experience

Over the past year, Hertzler & George has reinstalled a retaining wall, renewed the gravel on our long driveway, and taken care of weeding our flower beds during the summer months when we were away. All of the work has been well done and my wife and I are very pleased. We highly recommend Hertzler & George.

Soo happy!

We were so very pleased with our landscaping project done with H&G. They were efficient, kind, reasonable, and the end product was great! Would definitely use them again in the future!

Respectful Rejuvenation

My front and back yards are immensely improved, and all the new plants look shapely and vigorous. I especially appreciate the extra time and patience Brian Kemp took to find healthy and vigorous plants of the uncommon species I preferred for my natural woodland site; also for sending Jose and Carlos, both professional and steady workers who were courteous and responsive to my priorities. I look forward to working with Hertzler and George again in the future.
